Test drive Alpine A290 Rallye. A grey morning, smiling faces, and a promise

Where you’d normally hear the distant growl of an engine approaching, this morning brings a tense silence settling over the service park.

The team is there — focused, welcoming. François Champeau kicks things off with that typically Alpine way of laying things out plainly, without smoke and mirrors.

We’re not here for a marketing operation. We’re here to verify an idea that’s been haunting everyone for months: can an electric car really be a rally car?

“We really wanted this car to show everyone that it’s not just a pretty little electric car, but a real sports car — a credible race car,” says François Champeau.

He speaks of lineage, of home. Renault Sport in the rearview mirror, the legendary Clios, the Alpine A110 always on the horizon. The Alpine A290 Rallye doesn’t arrive alone — it comes with a history, familiar faces, and proven know-how.

Alpine A290 Rallye : From bare shell to stopwatch – the art of starting from scratch

The process starts in Douai with a bare shell, then moves to Dieppe for assembly. No makeshift conversions, no stripped-down series model. This is a car designed to race, built to FIA standards: roll cage, bucket seats, harnesses, and all the specific electrical safety systems.

The A290 Rallye retains much of its original electronic architecture — EV interconnections aren’t something you improvise — but Alpine allowed itself a few touches worthy of a true race prep team.

  • Brakes: 350 mm front discs, six-piston calipers from the Alpine A390. Standard ABS, recalibrated. Yes, it bites hard.
  • Suspension: specific Alpine Racing coilovers, tailored springs front and rear, revised mounting points. The stock multi-link rear setup does the job — and then some.
  • Tires: genuine Michelin rally compounds. Real rubber, real grip, even in the wet.
  • Transmission: a Sadev limited-slip differential integrated into the reducer. It’s what transforms traction — and makes you forget the road version.
  • Cooling: larger intercooler for the MGU, dedicated climate mapping to cool the battery continuously. The goal: consistent performance, not a car fading after the third run.

The weight? 1,530 kg. Close to the standard car — safety and roll cage have a price.

But the overall balance and differential change the perception completely. And for sound, Alpine treated itself to a practical indulgence: a modulable acoustic horn, designed both for spectator alert and a touch of identity. No “fake engine sound” speakers — just a thoughtful engineer-designer gesture that respects the sport.

A sporting framework that holds up

The launch took place in real-world conditions, not a lab. The first eight customer cars lined up in Châteauroux in early November, at a national event — with a full setup: organized charging, spare parts, scrutineering, safety briefing, and the Alpine Stores network on deck.

By 2026, the plan is set: six rounds in the French Rally Championship, a single-make cup in the spirit of the Clio trophies — adapted to EVs.

In the make’s cup format, the formula stays familiar: roadbook, liaison stages, specials, service — and charging during service, quite simply. The difference lies in the stage loops — sometimes two instead of three — so that energy management remains transparent for the driver.

Outside the cup, Alpine is preparing a list of regional rallies and hillclimbs “EV-compatible”, with official standings. The idea is clear: allow the A290 to compete outside the Alpine bubble, as soon as charging coverage and liaison planning make it viable.

Economically, there’s no sugarcoating: €49,900 before tax, built in Dieppe (and yes, only in blue at first — you know what that means), and around €7,000 before tax for a weekend rental, excluding entry fees. Not a pipe dream — a serious entry point.

A290 Rallye test: we wait, we charge, we go

Wet roads, fallen leaves, uneven tarmac — in short, the kind of surface where a new car shows its true nature. Two things stand out instantly: grip and traction. The ZF differential makes a world of difference from the road version, and the suspension setup gives the rear end more life, more response.

The car communicates clearly — readable, predictable, forgiving. It’s playful, never treacherous.

“On wet roads, the grip is stunning. The ZF differential makes a real difference from the stock car.”

We’ve known cars that become a handful in the rain. Not here. Instead, you feel a rally-ready stance, a reassuring width, stability that breeds confidence without dulling excitement. The A290 likes to be provoked; it responds with modern precision — no torque steer, no vibration.

It’s hard to fault. And yes — it’s very, very playful.

“It’s hard to catch it out — it’s very, very playful.”

What surprises most is the lack of perceived weight. 1,530 kg on paper, but behind the wheel, the diff and Michelin tires erase most of the expected inertia.

The car pivots neatly, straightens without drama, and lets you get back on throttle early — even on damp apexes. Braking? Sorted. The A390 calipers deliver.

The race-calibrated ABS is impressive: you stomp hard, it stays straight, and you feel modulation through the pads, not panic.

“Braking is impressive — those A390 calipers really do their job.”

Inside, it’s a new experience for rallying: silence, no parasitic vibrations, no engine revs rising in your ears. You catch yourself reaching for nonexistent paddles at first — thermal reflex — then you forget you’re in an electric car.

The pedal feel remains coherent, with regenerative braking present but not intrusive — designed to keep the feel of a race car, not a simulator.

As for power, honesty first: there’s room for more. The car keeps its stock torque and power figures, optimized for sustained performance through cooling, but you sense potential waiting to be unlocked.

That slight lack of punch on long wet straights doesn’t spoil the fun; it just frames it. And maybe that’s healthy for a training car meant to teach, not bite.

“Maybe a slight lack of power… you feel it could give more.”

Financially, the math is simple: around €8,000 including costs for a race weekend rental, serious technical support, a communicative chassis, confidence-inspiring brakes, and an interface that doesn’t intimidate.

It’s a formula that should work. It ticks the most important box: making you want to come back on Monday with your hands still trembling a little.

What really changes with the Alpine A290 Rallye

The A290 Rallye is a credible learning car — a true driving school in the noble sense. It lets you build real skills before moving to higher thermal categories.

And it does so while introducing modern discipline — energy management, service-stage charging, rethought loops — without removing rallying’s soul: the road sections, the rhythm, the special stage.

It’s not a concession; it’s an adaptation.

“At service, you can charge while working on the car — then go again.”

Officials will be trained, organizers too. There’s no sense that the A290 Rallye is apologizing for itself — quite the opposite. It proposes a method, backed by a brand that knows its trophies and understands that an EV calendar can’t be improvised.

The Alpine Stores network is committed — and that matters. A motorsport program thrives through its ecosystem, not just its spec sheets.

Human verdict: the right formula

We’ve known launches where you leave with polite doubts. Not this time. Here, you leave wanting more — to test it again on a cold dry day, to see how far the Sadev diff lets you claw into apexes without pushing wide.

You leave remembering precise braking, a talking rear end, and a silence that, far from frustrating, invites a new kind of focus.

The Alpine A290 Rallye is a balanced, thoughtful product, tailored to aspiring drivers. It opens a door — in fact, several: a clear single-make trophy, the chance to compete regionally with proper structure, and proof that you can train seriously without mechanical intimidation.

And yes, you can’t help but dream — because that’s rallying, too — of a “Rallye Jeunes” revival built around the A290.

It would be coherent, modern — and thrilling.

“Alpine has found the right formula… and we can’t help dreaming of a “Rallye Jeunes” comeback with the Alpine A290.”
